What's importance of the recursive structure of the composite pattern?

I am currently reading "Design Patterns: Elements of reusable code), GOF. I understand why and when a composite pattern should be used but can someone explain to me the importance of the recursive structure of the pattern? Also, what would change when adding new components with the composite pattern and without?
