How will you design architecture of your web app (whatsapp webapp/ twitter)

Recently I have been asked in interview, how will you design whatsapp web app or twitter?

I have answered with technology I will be using (React/Vue) and design patterns (Observable/Redux/Modular) & folder structure.

I am not sure, what is the interviewer exceptions?
