How booking a seat in a movie application really works?

I am learning JMS in JAVA and somewhere I read that they use messaging service for this but i want to know how it works .Like for example multiple user can select a seat but only one will get it booked and rest of them will get a notification.How this is happening?. What design pattern are they using?. It will be good if anyone can put a simple code to understand it also.
