How to prevent memory leak?

This question is about memory-leakage. What are best practices preventing memory leakage of sensitive data?

I know of just overwriting a variable or remove it. But I read a lot of sources saying that that's not enough in some cases. Garbage collection is not working properly in most cases too.

So how to prevent sensitive data to stay in memory after usage?
