Why we need WepAPI instead of mvc Controller because we can get everything from controller action as well instead of Web API

I am a bit confuse in the real need of WebApi as Controller actions can do almost everything which a webapi can do ?. Can any body please help me to understand why webapi can be needed and what type of scenarios can exist which we can't address from MVC Controller Actions ?. Thnaks in advance for your help.
