Is it ok to only use persistant data in a program - no in memory structure? [closed]

Traditionally I have always used an in-memory structure - array etc. However, is it ok to save to for example localStorage (HTML) directly and not use the in-memory structure? I have my view but wondered what others thought..General design question..
