Is it a good practise to develop an API for internal use in Laravel?

I am developing a web based eCommerce application using Laravel 5.5. Since, I am new to design pattern concepts. I am little bit confused that should I perform the actions like creating, updating or deleting the data through an API or simply using the Eloquent? Is it a good practice to manage your website through an API?
