node.js programming patterns for large applications

I've learned basic Node.Js by reading articles and doing the learnyounode workshop and others. Howeer, I want to start a personal project related to google maps. I'd like to write an application that uses gmaps for location, and then does something related to where one is located (such as displaying some custom info related to the street's name). That would be the start, I'd like to do many more things after that. I choose Node.Js because I want to get experience with it, and I like it quite a bit. (For the frontend I'm thinking about using Angular, just an option).

I could simply start writing code and see how it goes, as it goes, but I was wondering if there's any material or advice on how to approach coding so that it's complexity doesn't grow out of control over time. I've never written medion/large web applications. I've found this book, which seems to about understanding patterns (although it is quite expensive).

Anyway, I'm looking for opinions and/or recommendations on this subject. That is, programming patterns for potentially large applications.
