Are there any design patterns for user preference implementation in web apps?

Looking at adding user preferences to an angular app. At the moment i am thinking of the following.

1. Save user preferences as a Json object in db.
2. Load user in angular app with the preference object.
3. The tricky part the preference logic, any advice on this bit?
