When to use design patterns?

I have been thinking about design patterns and when to use them. Then I did a try to create something in "academic" manner with patterns and found out its awful, it is like patterns for patterns. The system is more flexible but too complicated, so far from the KISS principle.

Can I say, we may use patterns when the system design becomes lighter (more readable, less complicated) than without them? What do you think?
