Avoid users to change same records

I'm looking for a design patter that helps me to prevent a user to make changes in records being processed by another process.

Ex:

User "john" starts a job to process "something" in the application. Then user "jane" starts making changes in some records used by the john´s process.

in time, it´s a client-server application.
