What is the difference between a website Style Guide and a website Pattern Library?

Over the past year or so, I have been creating various websites; having learnt a lot along the way. Going into my next project, I want to 'tidy up' my learning and create a logical methodology for myself, as to replicate for future website projects.

Over the past few months, I have regularly come across 'Style Guides' and 'Pattern Libraries'. What exactly is the difference?

After spending quite a lot of time, reading up various takes on such differences, there seems to be a lot of contradiction. So much so, I have even come across websites which provide a list of 'Style Guides' only to then be taken to Pattern Libraries and vice versa. Given that this has occurred on such a regular basis, I can only assume that there is a lot of overlap.

Of the examples I have come across, both 'Style Guides' and 'Pattern Libraries' consist of similar content, such as:

  • Typography
  • Iconography
  • Navigation
  • Grid System

If I was to conclude my research, I would provide a very broad conclusion of:

Pattern Libraries provide a visual representation of each element/feature of a website, together with its HTML & CSS markup, whilst Style Guides provide an outline on how each Element from the Pattern Library should be used.

It would be great if anyone is able to provide a clear definition, together with links to resources which could further clarify such differences.
