Low level details vs design patterns

From 'Head First Design Patterns":

It also elevates your thinking about architectures by letting you think at the pattern level, not the nitty gritty object level.

'It' refers to design patterns.

Reading this it seems thinking at lower implementation levels is not a good practice? Why is it so? As a programmer this is the most natural way one would think. Isn't?
