where singleton design pattern is usually used?

Where exactly the singleton design pattern is used? I am asking for any real life example. Please someone tell me place or application where you practically used the singleton pattern in your software and what would be problem you could face without using singleton pattern in your software?

N.B : I know the singleton pattern.I don't wanna know about the pattern. I only wanna know the application.
