Is the repository pattern a abstraction layer?

I'm trying to do R&D on design patterns for personal growth and if I understand it correctly, the repository pattern is working as an abstraction layer, because it separates the implementation from functionality.

Maybe I am totally wrong here, or maybe I don't fully understand it; so hopefully someone can make explain why it is or isn't an abstraction layer, or why my question is not making sense.
