Maintain data conherence/consistency between webapp and server

I provide a webapp that use a significant amount of data stored on the server. The webpp uploads this data at startup, for a better user experience, and update the server on change. However, the data can also occasionnaly change on the server side.

Are there specific design patterns and implementations (HTTP-based) to inform the webapp of such changes, and specific considerations to take into account ?
