J2EE design patterns, do one need to know in current times?

I learnt Core Java more than a decade when Java was in the initial stages, however I mainly worked in C/C++, and Core Java only. A year back I decided to switch to Java Enterprise Edition. The things are way different when I initially learnt Java, and it is like re-learning Java.

Now, I came to know about J2EE design patterns (Which I assume would be different from "Gang of Four" design patters).

I am in doubt if one need to know the J2EE design patterns and can they be learnt before knowing anything about GoF deign patterns?

It might be naive question for experienced ones, however I am struggling to get some right perspective.
