Singleton : is it the proper implementation?

After reading a few article on Singleton (Singleton: How should it be used, Can any one provide me a sample of Singleton in c++?, C++ Singleton design pattern) I think it may be suited for my school project, but I'm still a little bit uncertain.

The application where I'd like to implement a singleton is one where you can build molecules and compounds from chemical element. The periodic table would be a singleton, because you only need one no matter what happens.

Am I correct in assuming that, or I should look into another design pattern?
