MVVM pattern and routing

I'm discovering the MVVM pattern. There are a lot of articles about some frameworks which implement it but mostly nothing about the concept in general. The best article which I found on the moment is this one. But it misses the idea of routing. So, What are the options to implement the routing with MVVM?

The good answer on the question should contain some general advice about implementation of routing and if possible some example of implementation(no matter what language or technology)
